V70 d5 52 plate 161.000miles in the last year i have had no problems starting at all. However, in the last month i noticed it was taking a lot more turns of the key to get started, cold or warm. I had the car serviced and had the glow plugs tested all fine, garage could not find any problems. A week later the car would not start at all and i had to have it recovered to the garage. They said they bled the system and it started ok. It has been starting, with a lot of turning over, since then until this morning where it has once more refused to start. I mentioned that i had read on this forum problems regarding injectors, garage says if it is an injector problem it will not start at all. I checked the cars history and it has had one injector replaced by the previous owner which was causing it not to start. If anyone has any ideas i would be very grateful for any help given. Many thanks
Theres lots of things it could be but on my 2003 V70 D5 it did break down once due to the in tank electric fuel pump which happened at about 115k miles , if this is burnt out you will just not get the car started . You should also change the fuel filter just to rule it out . When you initially turn on the ignition to the first position the fuel pump should click or make some noise to indicate its pressurising the fuel line , if its not then check it , could also be the pump relay. You can also check at the engine end , just take the fuel pipe off and see that fuel is being delivered to the engine mounted injection pump but make sure you catch the fuel as its at 2 bar pressure if it working correctly .

Thanks for that. I will wait until morning then take of the fuel pipe at the engine end.

Which fuel pipes at the engine end are you referring to Bernard? if its the metal pipes under engine cover i would not recomend removing them as they cant be replaced.

Sorry you are right I should have mentioned that , make sure you dont touch the pipes with high pressure in them , those feeding the common rail coming out of the fuel injection pump apparently once you undo these you have to replace them otherwise they are likely to leak and they cost a fortune ( what amazes me is they dont burst they have so much pressure inside them ) . There is a flexible pipe feeding the first stage of the injector pump delivering fuel from the fuel filter and this can be taken off and on again safely as it only has to cope with 30 psi max , will see if I can take a photo of it tommorow once I have got over the Christmas dinner . If you are unsure about which pipe then dont touch it .
Here is photo showing the low pressure feed and return pipes to the injection pump , banjo clips are fitted on mine to these pipes instead of the normal clamps as I am regularly taking these off . When you refit the pipes you are meant to leave the key in ignition position 2 for 80 seconds to ensure the low pressure in tank pump can pressurise and deliver fuel ready to the injection pump . There is no requirement to bleed the system unlike on older diesels the fuel pump just does the job ( thats if its working ) .As mentioned previously dont loosen any metal pipes to the injection pump.
Thanks for all your help but it's -1 outside now. I have lost interest in any self repair, I think another recovery to the garage is looming. The more I read the more it points to injectors so a plug-in to a computer may help. Again many thanks.
Thanks Ian, removed clips as instructed and no diesel showing at all on turn-over. However one squirt of brake cleaner up the air filter and the car started fine. It will be interesting to see if the car starts again in the morning. I have booked it into a local garage now to sort it out as the other option of a large sledgehammer will make a mess on the drive. Thanks again for your help. Robin.
