I am getting almost zero flow through the heater matrix in my '66 122S. The heater thermostat/valve seems to be opening and closing as it should. There is just not much pressure in the hoses. How likely is it that there is a flow restriction in the coolant system? Where should I start to troubleshoot? Thanks for all of your help!
Hi Steve, It could just be an air lock in the hoses connecting to the back of the motor. Check first the tallest one. Give it a squeeze and see if you can discern any bubbles. You can actually get rid of this with a bit of faffing about, but one option is to actually slice this hose in two at the highest point and fit a breather or joiner if you want the quickest but non-original looking route. Depending on the state of service of your car, it might be a good opportunity to give the system a good flush out. -connect a garden hose into the system and leave it running until the water runs clean. Do this both ways backflushing the system out as well. Don't forget to top up with plenty anti-freeze in this weather. Hope this helps. Gordon
Agreed - almost certainly an airlock. I usually manage to get the air out by running the engine with the radiator / expansion cap off, and once up to temperature (& the thermostat opens), squeeze the top hose - but be very careful to keep clear of the fan!!! Combined with a few jabs of the throttle, this highly unscientific method helps the system burp the air out. Might also be worth lifting the expansion tank up above the radiator whilst doing this. :)
Thanks for the input gentlemen! The system successfully 'burped' and upon opening the driver's side door I was greeted by volumes of hot air! Sometimes the unscientific methods are the best - thanks again! Steve
Ive been havign the opposite problem at the moment, i have to have the heat lever pushed up as hard as it will go to turn it off. is this normal? is there a replaceable seal in the block off that could have deteorated?
