xcd + overburning

MessageAuthor

Hi, A question (again :)). Yesterday, just playing with the overburning simulation in nero on a 700 MB CD, trying to burn an Mode2 image of a movie, i found that i can burn as long as 88:05:40 without a problem, that means 888 MB on a 703 MB. Ok, that was a simulation, and going over that value (890 MB) crash the simulation (Nero just hangs out and doen't respond). So, anyone ever tried this, is really posible without having to be extremely careful with the CD, or it's completily foolish and the CD can be just unreadable with a single scratch on it. I don't really know how overburning works, i think it use the last minutes at the end of the CD, is this removing some protection layer? Because if it's doing it, as Mode2 already remove one layer, it very risky. Thanks; Superfly PD: Maybe i will just burn one to see what happen :)

Many burners fail to see the end of a disc in simulation mode, so only a real burn will show how much you can overburn. Overburning uses the space for the leadout for data. When using quality discs, which don't deteriorate towards the outer border, it's no problem, but don't do it with crappy ones. 20 MB can still be OK, rarely more

what problems can occur with an overburned cd (720mb on a 700 disc)? not readable by all players? not readable any more with scratches? ... -> overburning a xcd with ~820mb (700mb disc) is ok?

Problems can be: not readable in a few players, unreadable beyond about 710 MB because of deteriorating media quality / degrading media which is just crappy outside

OK, i guess i just can put about 20 MB more, but the risk to be not readable or crappy playback, or simply lose data after a while is too risky, so i just continue with normal XCD burning :) Thanks

RE: xcd + overburning

I doubt many 80mn CD go further than 82mn. I usually don't get more than 81:52 on a yamaha CRW-F1, but I always use the same verbatims 80mn. [edit : note after this point I'm not talking about overburning] Well, anyways there still is that plextor new writer, that can tighten pits/lands size to the max tolerated in the specs, thus achieving up to 1.4 times the capacity. Compared to the sanyo which claimed to put 2 times the capacity, this one can be read with standard drives ('should'...) with no change. BTW, as the CRW-F1 i got can make wider pits/lands (called "audiomaster quality recording"), if this is done in the firmware, maybe we can tweak it to tighten pits/lands in order to achieve this too... Yumm.

Hmm, im already using 99min disks which in together with XCD can contain 970Mb, media files easily. With that new Plextor drive (if it can overburn upto 99min) one could have CDs that could hold up to 1360Mb mode2 files! I could fit many of my 2CD rips into 1 disk!

RE: xcd + overburning

Ok, i've just done an overburn. Burn an XCD image that contain 888 MB on a 80 min CD. The total time of the image is 88:14:12. I've set the overburn in nero at 88:15:00. The simulation don' t crash, but the burn end with an error because nero can't finalize the CD (some lead out error i think). It ends at 88:10:12. The CD is not readable on the CD-RW. On my DVD-Rom it is read but i doen't show anything, empty. SO maybe i can put something like 88:00:00, but i really doubt from what you guys says, so too risky to me. Cheers

you can put 82:30 on it, if you are lucky. 88 is far beyond reality

yep. I was talking not about overburning. I said without any kinky functions I get 81:50 max, about the same.... (hmm, and what about fucking instead of trolling in the threads...gotta go !)
