s40 cuts out on idle and chuggs

MessageAuthor

Dear all Right im new to all this I recently aquired a 2000 s40 1.8i and it is a cracking car apart from when its at idle. sumtimes on idle the car chuggs (sounds like a diesel) and it violently rocks about but it can quickly clear itself, and sumtimes when im coming to a stop (but still moving) i can feel it start to go then it just completely cuts out, engine management light and battery light comes on (its like the cars asthmatic or sumat) ive had it to volvo who cleared the codes (idle throttle response or sumat needed resetting) and throttle body was full of carbon or sumat but after 500ish miles its started doing it again!! Is there sumat thats been missed (bearing in mind no parts have been replaced) as its just downright annoying Cheers

suggest your car is Mitsubushi GDI engine?? if yes its prone to running rough manily due to the Engine Gass Recirculation (EGR), it takes partially burned air and puts it back through the throttle to re-burn and clean up emissions. If your car is this you need to the throttle body idle control valve and EGR unit cleaned thorouhgly, i.e. do it yourself, not the garage, then start using a high quality fuel e.g. shell v power, or BP ultimate, both have cleaning agents in them which help delay the onset of this condition. Cheaper fuels may be coking up the car very quickly especially if you don't get high rpmp long runs in where the engine can really clear its throat... also do a SEARCH on GDI rough running on this site and prepare yourself for some uninspiring stories.... Best of luck

I would agree with the above. Mine was temperamental for the first few weeks of me owning it, with an irregular idle and the odd hesitation. I have run it on Super U/L 60% of the time and given it a few good runs on the motorway and it has run sweet ever since. I figured the V Power has cleaned out the engine a bit, and the 'spirited' driving has cleared out a few cobwebs.
